11/07/06 :: CHICAGO = KICK-ASS READING, ANOTHER ODDBALL TV MOMENT, WACKY PODCAST INTERVIEW, FABULOUS BLOG, AND NEW AUTHOR PAL!

Had a blast reading to a big, phat crowd with Jill Soloway (Tiny Ladies in Shiny Pants) and Elaine Soloway (Division Street Princess)! We were appearing at Women and Children First bookstore the night before Ellen Burstyn, who I neglected to mention in Queen of the Oddballs happened to feng shui my living room! Elaine has a fabulous blog, and both Jill and I are featured in the latest entry about "Wounds." Check it out!

I appeared again on the WGN morning news show, and since I juggled the first time, this time they wanted me to eat fire. No prob in the rehearsals just seconds before my time slot. But right after my interview portion, I launch into my fire-eating song ("Hot Hot Hot Over You") and the freakin' lighter won't light! I spend what seems like hours trying to get my torch lit -- on camera! Finally a grip comes in and hands over his lighter, saving the day. It was actually really funny. Sheesh.

I met some AWESOME peeps! Fausto Fernos and Marc Felion do a hugely popular, award-winning podcast called Feast of Fools. They interviewed me for an hour, and I adored them so much I'm ready to stalk them! =) Check out the interview....

And Elizabeth Crane, genius author of When The Messenger is Hot, and All This Heavenly Glory. She sent me a BRILL piece for the latest installment of FRESH YARN (my website devoted to personal essays) so be sure to read it!

10/20/06 :: MY SECOND APPEARANCE ON ELLEN!! (almost...)

9/24/06 :: SO MANY UPDATES!

Sorry it's been awhile, but I've been on the last leg of my tour and swamped. I'm finally back with lots o' exciting news to report! WHOOO HOOO!

I just returned from a weekend book festival in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where I appeared on Kelo, the TV news that goes throughout the whole state of SD (and they have such an old-school, FONT-astic logo, I'm including for your pleasure!). I was interviewed on the NPR station for a half hour -- LIVE in Barnes and Noble in front of a large audience, did some other radio shows, book signings, and a fun-filled presentation!

I also hung out with two Pulitzer Prize winners, the U.S. Poet Laureate, best-selling authors, and Nancy Pearl, the ROCK STAR librarian who has an action figure modeled after her (and it outsells the Jesus and Moses action figures!!). She also happens to have her own TV show in Seattle, and a regular show on NPR where she gave a lovely review of the "laugh out loud" Queen of the Oddballs a few weeks ago! READ THE REST...

OTHER TOUR SHENANIGANS!

Did several events in Pittsburgh, thanks to some fans, now friends, who coaxed me out there for a member event at the NPR station they work at, WYEP. Loads o' fun. Also did several radio interviews there (go to AUDIO to hear some!), and a Good Morning Pittsburgh type TV show, along with Marvin Hamlisch! Isn't he snappy in his white bow tie?! If only he wore that on the morning show. I wore mine.

NEW SITE UPDATES!

New REVIEWS, BLOG mentions, RADIO SHOWS (including a totally fun interview with Sabrina Artel on her highly acclaimed show Trailer Talk, AND MORE!

8/23/06 :: LARGEHEARTED BOY LOVES QUEEN OF THE ODDBALLS!

An awesome site where the creator, David Gutowski, features pieces by authors who list a series of songs that relate in some way to their recent book (an imaginary soundtrack, music featured in the book, music that inspired the book) along with a short description of each track's importance. I wrote something for it, and David wrote a FAB intro, where he said:

"... one of the funniest books I have read in a long time. Carlip's self-deprecating humor befits this Gong Show winner's account of her life. This is my favorite non-graphic memoir of the year, on a par with Alison Bechdel's excellent Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic."

7/31/06 :: BOZO 'n' ME!

Sorry for the recent lack of updates, I've been so busy on tour, dealing with our fab Memoirists Collective contest, and still doing everything I can to spread the word about Queen of the Oddballs!

My tour has been SPECTACULAR and I love meeting so many oddballs on the road! One of my fave moments recently: I was appearing on the morning news in Chicago at WGN-TV, and I needed a prop table to set my juggling balls (hidden in gold lamé purse) down on as I performed. The stage manager brought me a table, and proudly exclaimed: "This was the original Bozo's table." Yeah. You heard me.

Finally, new website updates!

** EIGHT new press articles/reviews/interviews!
** More tour dates added!

The Ditty Bops, the AWESOME Warner Brothers recording artists who give new meaning to entertainment, are on a national tour, riding bikes across the country to every gig! They keep a daily blog for all their fans, and a recent posting said:

3/1/06 :: Queen of the Oddballs has been chosen by the independent bookstores throughout the country to be included on the American Bookseller's Association Book Sense Pick list for May!

You've probably seen the printed material (as well as a featured shelf) at your local independent book store (remember those?!)

They only pick 20 books a month out of thousands, so it's quite an honor. They include a brief review from a bookseller, and here's mine.

"Hillary Carlip has lived a life we all wish we could claim ... and never has being so different seemed so unbelievably cool. You will want to claim your inner oddball and let it radiate on the world around you!" --Cynthia St. John, Kepler's Books & Magazine, Menlo Park, CA
